What this tool does

Upload an AVIF image and get a JPG version instantly - decoded using your browser's own native AVIF support, which is broadly available in current versions of every major browser, so no extra decoding library is needed.

Converts an AVIF image to JPG format.

Uses your browser's own built-in AVIF decoder directly - unlike HEIC or TIFF, AVIF decode support is now broadly available natively, so no separate decoding library needs to be downloaded.

Flattens any transparent pixels onto a white background before encoding, since JPEG has no alpha channel and AVIF images can carry one.

Outputs the JPG at the exact pixel dimensions of the decoded AVIF source, with no resizing applied.

How to use it

  1. Choose your AVIF file.
  2. Download the converted JPG.

Why use this converter

AVIF is small but not accepted everywhere. Converting to JPG makes it work in older apps, forms and editors.

Why we built it

We built the AVIF to JPG converter on the browser's own AVIF decoder, which is now widely supported. Keep transparency with AVIF to PNG and convert WebP with WebP to JPG.

Why AVIF doesn't need a special decoder like HEIC does

AVIF has achieved much broader native browser support than HEIC ever has.

AVIF is a modern, efficient image format that current versions of every major browser can now decode natively, the same way they handle PNG or JPEG - which is a genuinely different situation from HEIC, which still has no native browser support anywhere. That's why this conversion works with the same simple load-and-re-encode approach used for other well-supported formats, rather than needing its own dedicated decoding library the way the HEIC converter does.

What happens to transparency when converting to JPG

AVIF can carry an alpha channel, but JPEG has no transparency of its own.

AVIF, being based on the AV1 video codec's intra-frame compression, supports an alpha channel the same way PNG or WebP does - so a graphic or sticker-style AVIF can have genuinely transparent areas. JPEG has no equivalent channel at all, so before encoding, this tool fills the canvas with a solid white background and draws the decoded image on top of it. Any transparent or semi-transparent pixels in the source end up as white in the JPG, rather than the black most naive converters would produce by leaving the canvas unfilled.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert AVIF to JPG online for free?

Choose your AVIF file and the JPG version is ready to download instantly.

Does this need a special decoder like the HEIC converter does?

No - AVIF decode support is now built into every major current browser, so no separate library needs to be downloaded first.

Will this work in an old browser?

It needs a browser version with native AVIF decode support - very old browsers may not be able to open the file, though this covers the vast majority of browsers in current use.

Does this preserve HDR or other AVIF-specific features?

No - this performs a standard decode-and-re-encode to JPG, which doesn't carry over AVIF-specific advanced features like HDR metadata.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser - nothing is sent to a server.

What happens if my AVIF image has a transparent background?

It's flattened onto a white background before being saved as JPG, since JPEG has no transparency channel - convert to PNG instead if you need to keep the transparency.

Will the output be the same dimensions as my original AVIF file?

Yes - the JPG is generated at the exact pixel dimensions of the decoded AVIF image, with no resizing applied.
