Baby Name Generator
Generate baby names from real, current naming data - free, no signup.
Click the star to pin a name you like. Pinned items stay while you keep generating, are remembered when you come back, and can be copied on their own or with everything else.
What this tool does
Pick boy or girl (or leave it on Any for both) and generate a list of real given names, drawn from official US Social Security Administration and UK Office for National Statistics popularity data - the same authorities that publish the actual names parents are choosing right now. Pin the ones you like, generate more, and copy or download your shortlist whenever you're ready.
Generates real given names for boys and girls, sourced from official US SSA and UK ONS baby-name popularity data rather than invented or guessed names.
Lets you pin names you like as you go - your shortlist is saved on your device and survives generating more, or coming back later.
Takes an optional seed so you can reproduce or share the exact same list of results.
Shows the total number of distinct combinations the generator can produce for the category you've chosen, so you know how deep the pool actually goes.
Runs entirely in the browser against a local word list - once the page has loaded, generating more names needs no further network request.
How to use it
- Choose Boy, Girl, or leave it on Any.
- Pick how many names you want and press Generate.
- Star any name you like to pin it, then copy or download your shortlist.
Why use this name generator
Names that are currently popular come from official records, not guesses, and a shortlist helps couples compare. Real data avoids invented names that nobody uses.
Why we built it
We built the baby name generator from real, current US and UK popularity data. Find a middle name with the middle name generator and a surname with the last name generator.

Where these names actually come from
Real popularity data, not a random name-sounding word generator.
Every name here comes from official government sources: the US Social Security Administration's published rankings of the most popular baby names, and the UK Office for National Statistics' equivalent data for England and Wales. That means every name shown is a real name real parents are currently giving their children, not a plausible-sounding invention - which matters, because a 'baby name generator' that quietly makes up names defeats the actual point of the search.
The list is deliberately global rather than split by country: a name popular in the US and a name popular in the UK are both just English-language given names, and there is no reason to force you to pick a country first when you are simply looking for a name.
What this tool won't tell you
A generator that pulls from real popularity data still can't tell you a name is safe, unique, or free of any conflict.
Every name here is real and currently in use, which cuts both ways: it means the list is grounded in actual naming data, but it also means these are, by definition, names other families are already choosing. This tool doesn't check whether a name is unique, whether it clashes with a relative or a child at the same school, or whether it carries an association you wouldn't want - it only surfaces real names from official popularity rankings. Screening a shortlist against your own family, culture and circle is a step worth doing separately, after you've generated one here.
If you're naming a business, brand or product rather than a person, this tool isn't the right fit - see the business name generator or brand name generator instead, and note that neither of those checks trademark or domain availability either.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Controls | Boy or girl names. |
| Output | Real names from US and UK popularity data. |
| Shortlist | Pin names you like; a seed reproduces the same list. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A classic name is missing | The pool is current popular names. | Use the first name generator for a broader pool. |
| A name already exists | Generated names can coincide with real people, brands or characters. | Search for it before using it for anything public or commercial. |
| The same names come back | The word or syllable pool is finite, or a seed is set. | Clear the seed, change the options or generate a larger batch. |
Assumptions and limitations
- This draws from currently popular names (recent US and UK data); a name that's classic or historical but not currently trending may not appear here - the first name generator's broader pool covers more of those.
- Names are grouped as boy or girl based on how they're officially recorded in the source data; naming is a personal choice and this is a starting point for ideas, not a rule.
Frequently asked questions
How do I generate baby names online for free?
Choose boy, girl or any, pick how many you want, and press Generate - real names drawn from official US and UK data appear instantly.
Are these real names, or randomly generated ones?
Real names - every one comes from official US Social Security Administration or UK Office for National Statistics baby-naming data, not an invented word generator.
Why isn't this split by country?
A given name doesn't need a country attached to be useful - this pools real US and UK data together so you see the widest set of real options in one place.
Can I save the names I like?
Yes - click the star next to a name to pin it. Pinned names are saved on your device and stay in your list as you keep generating.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Generation happens entirely in your browser - nothing is sent to a server, and your pinned list is saved only in your own browser's storage.
Will this generate a name that's already common?
Very possibly - these are real, currently popular names, which means by definition many other families are drawing from the same list. This tool surfaces real options; it doesn't check or guarantee any kind of uniqueness.
Does this check whether a name has a negative meaning or association?
No - this only pulls names from official popularity data. It doesn't screen meanings, associations, or how a name reads in other languages or contexts; that's worth researching separately for a name you're seriously considering.
