What this tool does
Generate cat names from a pool blending currently trending names (like Luna and Mochi) with classic, decades-enduring favourites (like Felix and Tabby) - drawn from published pet-naming data, not invented syllables. Pin the ones you like, generate more, and copy or download your shortlist.

Lets you pin names you like as you go - your shortlist is saved on your device and survives generating more.
Takes an optional seed so you can reproduce or share the exact same list of results.
Generates 6 to 100 names per batch, with a "no repeats within a batch" option on by default, and downloads the full list as a plain .txt file.

Why use this name generator
Cat names mix trending favourites with classics, and a name should work for a cat that may not answer. Real popular names are a good start.
Why we built it
We built the cat name generator by blending trending names with classic cat favourites from published data. See dogs with the dog name generator and other animals with the pet name generator.

Trending and classic, blended together
Not just this year's fashion, and not just the old standbys either.
This pool deliberately combines two kinds of real cat names: currently trending ones from recent pet-naming data (Luna, Nova, Mochi), and classic names that have stayed popular for cats specifically for decades (Felix, Tabby, Whiskers-adjacent names like Tiger and Ginger). That mix means the generator surfaces both a fashionable pick and a timeless one, rather than only reflecting whatever happens to be trending this year.
Why cat names don't follow the same short-and-punchy rule as dog names
The functional pressure that shapes dog names is much weaker for cats.
Dog-naming data leans hard toward short, hard-consonant names because dogs respond well to their name as a recall cue - a name a dog can pick out reliably across a park. Cats are far less responsive to their name as a recall cue than dogs are, so that same functional pressure barely applies, and cat-naming data reflects it: names get chosen more for how they sound to the owner than for how well the cat will respond to them, which is a real reason this pool includes longer, softer names (Belinda, Sheila, Clementine-style names) alongside short punchy ones without either category dominating.
The trending-versus-classic mix has a similar real cause: pet names in general move faster than human baby names, since naming a pet doesn't carry the decades-long social weight of naming a child - a popular film or celebrity can push a cat name into a top-ten list within a single year. See our guide on pet-naming trends for the full comparison between dog, cat and horse naming conventions.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Controls | Count and an optional seed. |
| Output | Real cat names from published pet-naming data. |
| Shortlist | Pin names you like; a seed reproduces the same list. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A name does not suit gender | The pool is not split by gender. | Choose any you like. |
| A name already exists | Generated names can coincide with real people, brands or characters. | Search for it before using it for anything public or commercial. |
| The same names come back | The word or syllable pool is finite, or a seed is set. | Clear the seed, change the options or generate a larger batch. |
Assumptions and limitations
- This draws from a curated pool of real, published cat names rather than an exhaustive database - an unusual or rare name won't appear here.
- Names aren't split by gender - it's one broad, blended pool.
Frequently asked questions
How do I generate a cat name online for free?
Pick how many you want and press Generate - real cat names appear instantly.
Are these real names cats actually have?
Yes - every one comes from published pet-naming data, blending current trends with classic favourites, not an invented word generator.
Does this include both trendy and classic names?
Yes - the pool deliberately blends currently trending names with names that have stayed popular for cats for decades.
Can I save the names I like?
Yes - click the star next to a name to pin it. Pinned names are saved on your device and stay in your list as you keep generating.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Generation happens entirely in your browser - nothing is sent to a server, and your pinned list is saved only in your own browser's storage.
Why aren't cat names as short and punchy as dog names?
Cats are far less responsive to their name as a recall cue than dogs, so there's less functional pressure toward short, sharp-sounding names - cat names lean more toward what sounds good to the owner.
How is this different from the pet name generator?
This tool is cat-only, drawing from one blended pool of trending and classic cat names. The pet name generator instead lets you choose Dog, Cat or Rabbit and pulls from a separate, species-specific pool for each.
