Crop Yield Calculator
Multiply the area by the yield to get tonnes, kilograms, bushels and bags.
What this tool does
Area multiplied by yield per area is the harvest: 2.5 hectares at 6 tonnes per hectare gives 15 tonnes. From there the calculator converts to kilograms, to bushels for the crop you choose and to bags at your bag weight.
Multiplies the area by the yield per hectare or bushels per acre to give the total harvest.
Converts the total into tonnes, kilograms, bushels for your crop and bags at your bag weight.
Switches between hectares and tonnes for metric ground and acres and bushels for imperial.
Uses each crop's bushel weight - wheat 60 lb, corn 56 lb, barley 48 lb - for the conversion.
How to use it
- Choose hectares and tonnes per hectare, or acres and bushels per acre.
- Enter the area that was harvested.
- Enter the yield the land produced per hectare or per acre.
- Pick the crop so bushels convert correctly, and set your bag weight.
- Read the total in tonnes, kilograms, bushels and bags.
Why use this tool
A yield figure on its own tells you very little: 6 tonnes per hectare is a rate, and the rate has to be multiplied out before it becomes something you can sell, store or carry. Totals are what fill a shed, what a buyer quotes against and what a season is judged on, and they are the number that has to survive being converted between the metric figures an agronomist uses and the bushels a buyer quotes.
The conversions are where seasons quietly go wrong. A bushel is a weight that differs by crop, so the same field is 15 tonnes, 15,000 kilograms or 551 bushels of wheat - and getting the crop's bushel weight wrong moves the bushel figure by 7% or more.
Why we built it
We built this crop yield calculator because the arithmetic is trivial and the conversions are not. Area times yield gives the total, and after that every downstream number - kilograms for a contract, bushels for a buyer, bags for the store - needs a different constant that depends on the crop. Doing all of them from one input keeps the figures consistent, which is what the Fertilizer Calculator and the Irrigation Water Calculator do for the inputs on the same land.
To see what the harvest is worth, the Unit Price Calculator divides a price across the weight, and the Percentage Calculator works out the change against last season.
Who this tool is for
- Farmers converting a field yield into a total for the store or the buyer
- Agronomists checking a per-hectare figure against a contract in bushels
- Smallholders estimating how many bags a plot will fill
- Buyers and co-ops re-figuring a quoted rate for a different unit
How it works
The total is one multiplication: area × yield per unit area. Everything after that is conversion. Tonnes become kilograms by a thousand, kilograms become bushels by dividing by the crop's bushel weight in kilograms, and bags come from dividing the total weight by the bag weight and rounding the last bag up.
| Figure | Calculation |
|---|---|
| Total yield | area × yield per area |
| Kilograms | tonnes × 1,000 |
| Bushels | kilograms ÷ crop bushel weight |
| Bags | total weight ÷ bag weight, rounded up |
| Wheat and soybeans | 60 lb per bushel, or 27.22 kg |
| Corn, barley, oats | corn 56 lb (25.40 kg), barley 48 lb (21.77 kg), oats 32 lb (14.51 kg) |
A bushel is a weight, not a volume - it was a volume of a crop at a standard moisture, which is why it differs by crop. Always convert using the crop's own bushel weight rather than a single figure.
A worked example
Press Load sample and the calculator opens on a wheat harvest. The inputs are exactly these:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Units | Hectares and tonnes per hectare |
| Area | 2.5 ha |
| Yield | 6 t/ha |
| Crop | Wheat, 60 lb per bushel |
| Bag weight | 50 kg |
With those values the calculator returns:
- Total yield: 15 t
- In kilograms: 15,000 kg
- In bushels: 551 bu
- Bags of 50 kg: 300
The multiplication is 2.5 × 6 = 15 tonnes, which is 15,000 kilograms. Wheat at 60 pounds to the bushel is 27.22 kilograms, and 15,000 divided by 27.22 is 551 bushels. Fifty-kilogram bags then hold the same harvest in 300 bags.
What you enter, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Units | Hectares and tonnes per hectare, or acres and bushels per acre. |
| Area | The ground that produced the harvest. |
| Yield | What the land produced per hectare or per acre. |
| Crop and bag weight | The crop for its bushel weight, and the bag you will fill. |
| Result | Total in tonnes, kilograms, bushels and bags. |
| Copy | The whole calculation as plain text. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bushels look wrong | The wrong crop was selected for the bushel weight. | Choose the actual crop: wheat and soybeans are 60 lb, corn 56 lb, barley 48 lb. |
| The total is out by a factor of 1,000 | Yield was entered in kilograms per hectare rather than tonnes. | Enter tonnes per hectare - 6,000 kg/ha is 6 t/ha. |
| Bag count is one higher than expected | The last partial bag is rounded up. | A partial bag still needs filling; the calculator never reports a fraction of a bag. |
| Nothing is calculated | The area or the yield is blank or zero. | Enter an area and a yield greater than zero. |
Assumptions and limitations
- Bushel counts depend on the crop selected - wheat and soybeans are 60 lb, corn 56 lb, barley 48 lb.
- The bag count rounds a partial bag up, so the final bag is never shown as empty.
- Yield is assumed uniform across the area; patchy fields do not average themselves out.
- Moisture content changes real-world weights - the calculator works on the figures you enter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate crop yield from hectares?
Multiply the area in hectares by the yield per hectare. 2.5 hectares at 6 tonnes per hectare is 15 tonnes, which the calculator then converts to kilograms, bushels and bags.
How many kilograms are in a tonne of crop?
One tonne is always 1,000 kilograms, whatever the crop. So 15 tonnes is 15,000 kilograms, and that figure is the basis for the bushel and bag conversions.
How many bushels are in a tonne of wheat?
Wheat is 60 pounds per bushel, which is 27.22 kilograms, so a tonne is about 36.7 bushels. The calculator divides your kilograms by the crop's own bushel weight.
How do I convert yield in bushels per acre?
Switch the calculator to acres and bushels per acre and enter the figure directly; it works out the total in bushels and converts to kilograms and bags from there.
How many bags will my harvest fill?
Divide the total weight by your bag weight and round up. 15,000 kilograms in 50 kilogram bags is exactly 300 bags, and the calculator shows the count with the bag size in the label.
Is the crop yield calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no account and no upload. The conversion runs in your browser, so your harvest figures stay on your device.
