What this tool does

Dwarf names in fantasy are short, hard and consonant-heavy, usually paired with a compound clan name drawn from metalwork, stone and mining vocabulary - Ironfist, Stonebeard, Forgeheart. The two halves work together and are generated together here.

Produces dwarf given names on their own or paired with a clan name, from nearly 12,000 combinations.

Clan names are compounds built from craft, stone and metal vocabulary rather than an arbitrary word list, which is what makes them read as belonging to one culture.

Every clan name is drawn whole from a fixed list of pre-built compounds - Ironfist, Goldvein, Runecarver - rather than two words joined at random, so nothing comes out as an odd or meaningless pairing.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you want a given name alone or a full name with a clan.
  2. Pick how many names you want.
  3. Press Generate and pin the ones you like.
  4. Copy the list, or note the seed to return to it.

Why use this name generator

Dwarf names follow a familiar craft-and-stone convention, and clan names that sound right are hard to improvise. Compounds from mining and smithing vocabulary read as belonging to the same culture.

Why we built it

We built the dwarf name generator with clan names made from craft and stone vocabulary, which is what the archetype is built on. Pair it with the gnome name generator and the elven name generator.

Who this tool is for

  • Fantasy authors and dungeon masters
  • Role-players
  • Game designers

When to use it

  • Naming a dwarf character or clan.
  • Building a mountain stronghold in a story or game.
  • Finding names for NPCs and merchants.
  • Brainstorming worldbuilding details.

The sound of a dwarf name

Dwarf names are the phonetic opposite of elven ones, and that opposition is the point. Where elven names use liquid consonants and open vowels, dwarf names use hard stops, short vowels and closed syllables. Balin, Thorin, Durin, Gimli.

The convention traces back to the Old Norse dvergatal - the catalogue of dwarf names in the Poetic Edda - which is where Tolkien took his from directly. That is why dwarf names across fantasy still carry a Norse texture even in settings with no Norse influence at all.

Practically, this means two syllables, a hard consonant at the start, and a closed ending. Names that drift longer or softer stop reading as dwarven quite quickly.

Clan names

The compound clan name does a lot of work in a small space. Ironfist tells you the clan are fighters; Goldvein tells you they are miners or merchants; Runecarver tells you they keep records. One word establishes what a whole family does.

What clan name elements signal
Element typeExamplesSuggests
MetalIron, Gold, Copper, SteelSmithing, trade, wealth
StoneStone, Rock, Boulder, FlintMasonry, endurance, mining
ToolAnvil, Hammer, ForgeCraft, industry
BodyFist, Beard, Hand, BackMartial or physical reputation

If you are building a set of clans for a hold, generate several and pick ones whose elements do not overlap. Three clans all built on metal words read as one clan with three spellings.

Why this generator does not split names by gender

In Tolkien's legendarium, dwarf-women are mentioned but almost never named individually - only a handful appear across the whole body of work, and usually in passing. That gap became a genre habit rather than a rule anyone wrote down: a lot of fantasy since has followed suit, giving dwarves one shared naming convention rather than separate ones for men and women.

That is why the given-name pool here is not split into men's and women's lists the way the elf or human generators are. The archetype, as it is usually written, does not carry that distinction, and inventing an even split would be adding a convention that is not actually there in the source material this generator is modelling.

Practical notes

  • Dwarf names are usually written the same way for all genders in fantasy convention, with the clan name doing the work of identification.
  • Keep given names to two syllables. Three starts to sound elven.
  • The clan name is the memorable half. If a character will be referred to once, use the clan name rather than the given name.
  • For a family, fix the clan name and generate only given names - the shared surname is what makes them read as related.
  • Pin as you go and read the shortlist aloud; hard consonants blur together on the page more than they do in speech.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

How do dwarf names usually sound?

Short, hard and closed - two syllables, a hard consonant at the start, and a consonant ending. Balin, Thorin, Durin. They are the phonetic opposite of elven names, and that contrast is deliberate across fantasy.

What is a dwarven clan name?

A compound family name built from craft, stone or metal vocabulary - Ironfist, Goldvein, Runecarver. It does a lot of work in one word, signalling what the family does and how they are known.

Are dwarf names gendered?

In most fantasy convention they are written the same way regardless of gender, with the clan name carrying identification. Some settings differentiate; this generator does not, so any name here suits any character.

Can I use these names in my own work?

Yes. The names are assembled from generic syllables and common vocabulary, and no one can hold a trademark on a name produced by combining ordinary word parts. Check any specific name you plan to build a product around, as with any name.

How many names can this generate?

Nearly 12,000 distinct combinations with clan names included. The exact figure for your current selection is shown beneath the options.

Can I get the same names again?

Enter any word as a seed and the same seed with the same settings always produces the same list. Leave it blank and every press gives something different. Most generators offer no route back to a name you liked.

Why isn't this generator split into men's and women's dwarf names?

Because fantasy dwarves conventionally aren't. Tolkien's dwarf-women are almost never named individually, and a lot of fantasy since has followed that habit, giving dwarves one shared naming convention rather than two gendered ones. Splitting the pool here would invent a distinction the archetype doesn't usually carry.

Can I generate several given names for one family, sharing a clan name?

Not automatically - there is no control that fixes the clan while re-rolling only the given name. Generate in the given-name-only style, pick several you like, and pair them yourself with one clan name from a separate generation. That is exactly what makes a set read as one family rather than as strangers.
