What this tool does

A final grade calculator works out the score you need on a final exam to finish the course with a target grade. Enter your current grade, the grade you want and the percentage of the course the final is worth, and it returns the required score and whether it is reachable.

Rearranges the weighted-grade formula to find the final exam score that gives your target overall grade.

Shows the share of the course that is already graded and states whether the target is reachable.

How to use it

  1. Enter your current grade as a percentage.
  2. Enter the overall grade you want.
  3. Enter how much the final exam is worth, as a percentage of the course.
  4. Read the score needed.
  5. Try different targets to see how the requirement changes.

Why use a final grade calculator

Solves for the score you need on the final, rather than leaving you to rearrange a formula. In the last weeks of a course the only question is what the final has to deliver. Knowing the number lets you decide where to put your effort, or whether a grade is still within reach.

Why we built it

We built the final grade calculator to solve for the score you need on the exam, instead of leaving you to rearrange a formula under stress. Use the grade calculator to work out your current weighted grade first, and the GPA calculator to see how it feeds into your overall average.

Who this tool is for

  • Students deciding how hard to revise for a final
  • Parents helping with grade planning
  • Teachers explaining weighted grades

When to use it

  • Before a final exam or final project.
  • Deciding how much to revise for a target grade.
  • Checking whether a grade boundary is still possible.
  • Comparing the effort needed for a B against an A.

How it is calculated

Required score = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal. The current grade is assumed to cover the remaining (1 − w) of the course.

Worked example: current 82, target 85, final worth 30%. Required = (85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 27.6 ÷ 0.3 = 92.

A result over 100 means the target is out of reach without extra credit; a result at or below 0 means you have already secured it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?

Use (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with weight as a decimal. The calculator does it from your three numbers.

What if the result is over 100%?

The target cannot be reached on the final alone. Lower the target or ask whether extra credit is available.

What is the weight of the final?

The percentage of your total course grade that the final contributes, usually stated in the syllabus.

Does it work for a project instead of an exam?

Yes. Use the project’s weight in place of the final’s.

Can it tell me what I need to pass?

Yes. Enter the pass mark as the grade you want.
