Rotate & Flip Image
Rotate or flip an image - free, no signup.
Your image is rotated inside this page. It is never uploaded.
What this tool does
Upload an image and rotate it left or right in 90-degree steps, rotate a full 180 degrees, or flip it horizontally or vertically - each change applies instantly, and you can combine rotation with flipping before downloading the result.
Rotates an image left, right, or 180 degrees.
Flips an image horizontally (mirror) or vertically.
Corrects EXIF orientation first, so your rotation is applied to the photo as you actually see it, not to whatever raw orientation the camera sensor recorded.
Recomputes the canvas dimensions on every 90° or 270° rotation, swapping width and height, so a portrait photo rotated sideways exports as a landscape-shaped file instead of being cropped or padded to fit the original frame.
Re-renders each rotate or flip from the original corrected image rather than compounding transforms on the previous result, so clicking through several changes before downloading doesn't accumulate blur or quality loss.
How to use it
- Choose an image.
- Press a rotate or flip button - you can combine several.
- Download the result.
Why use this tool
Photos arrive sideways or mirrored, and fixing that in a heavy editor is unnecessary. Quarter turns and flips cover nearly every case.
Why we built it
We built the rotate and flip tool to correct EXIF orientation first, so your rotation never compounds into the wrong angle. Crop afterwards with the image cropper and adjust the look with the image filter editor.
Handy alongside this: the EXIF Metadata Viewer and the EXIF Remover.
Who this tool is for
- Anyone fixing a sideways photo
- Scanners and photographers
- Designers mirroring graphics
When to use it
- Fixing a sideways photo.
- Mirroring a selfie or a design.
- Rotating scans.
- Preparing images for upload.
Why EXIF orientation is corrected first
Without this, a rotation button can produce the wrong angle entirely.
A phone photo often carries an EXIF tag telling viewers to rotate it 90 or 180 degrees for correct display, while the actual pixel data stays in the sensor's native orientation. A rotate tool that ignores this and rotates the raw pixel grid directly can compound with the existing tag in an unexpected way - pressing 'rotate right' might visually rotate the photo left, or leave it looking unchanged. This tool corrects the EXIF orientation first, so every rotation and flip button does exactly what it says relative to the photo you're actually looking at.
The order flip and rotation are applied in
Flip and rotate aren't fully independent - which one is applied first changes what you see.
Internally, a flip is applied along the image's own original left-right and top-bottom axes, and the rotation is applied afterward on top of that result. In practice this means flipping horizontally after a 90° rotation mirrors the image along what was originally its horizontal axis - which, once the 90° turn is factored in, looks like a vertical mirror on screen. The same two actions in the opposite order produce a different-looking result for that reason.
If a combination of rotate and flip clicks doesn't give the look you expected, press Reset and reapply them - the result always renders fresh from the original corrected photo, so re-ordering costs nothing.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Input | One image. |
| Controls | Rotate left, right or 180 degrees; flip horizontally or vertically. |
| Output | A PNG. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A small angle is needed | Only 90-degree steps are available. | Use an editor for free rotation. |
| File is large | PNG is lossless. | Convert to JPG afterwards. |
| It is slow or fails on a huge image | Very large images use a lot of browser memory. | Reduce the size first, or work on a desktop browser. |
Assumptions and limitations
- The result is exported as PNG, which is lossless but larger than a re-compressed JPEG for photographs.
- This performs 90-degree-step rotations and flips only - for an arbitrary angle, use an image editor with a freehand rotate tool.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rotate an image online for free?
Upload your image and press a rotate button - the result updates instantly, ready to download.
Can I combine rotation and flipping?
Yes - rotate and flip actions apply on top of each other, so you can build up the exact orientation you need.
Why might a rotate button seem to do the opposite of what I expect?
This shouldn't happen here, since EXIF orientation is corrected first - but it's the classic bug in tools that skip that step, rotating the raw sensor data instead of the photo as displayed.
What format is the result saved as?
PNG, which is lossless - the rotated pixels are preserved exactly, at the cost of a larger file than a re-compressed JPEG.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Rotating and flipping happen entirely in your browser - nothing is sent to a server.
Does rotating a portrait photo sideways change its width and height?
Yes - a 90° or 270° rotation swaps the canvas dimensions, so a 3000×4000 portrait becomes a 4000×3000 landscape-shaped file rather than being cropped to fit the original frame.
Does flipping before or after rotating give the same result?
No - flip is always applied along the image's original axes before rotation is applied on top, so flipping horizontally after a 90° rotation visually mirrors what looks like the vertical axis on screen. Reset and reorder the clicks if you need a specific result.
