What this tool does

Upload a JPG or JPEG file and get a PNG version instantly, converted entirely in your browser - useful when a tool or platform specifically requires PNG input.

Converts a JPG/JPEG file to PNG format.

PNG is lossless, so no additional compression artifacts are introduced during this conversion - though any artifacts already present in the original JPEG remain, since PNG can't remove information the source file no longer has.

Shows the original JPG size and the converted PNG's size, along with the image dimensions, before you download.

Locks in the image exactly as decoded from the JPEG - once saved as PNG, re-saving this file again won't introduce any further compression artifacts, even though whatever was already lost from the original JPEG can't be brought back.

How to use it

  1. Choose your JPG file.
  2. Download the converted PNG.

Why use this converter

Some tools and workflows require PNG, for example to add transparency later. Converting is quick, though it cannot restore lost JPEG detail.

Why we built it

We built the JPG to PNG converter so the output is genuinely lossless, adding no new compression artifacts. Go the other way with PNG to JPG or use the image format converter for WebP.

Who this tool is for

  • Designers needing lossless files or transparency support
  • Developers preparing assets
  • Anyone editing a JPG repeatedly

When to use it

  • Moving a photo to an app that needs PNG.
  • Editing without further JPEG loss.
  • Preparing for transparency work.
  • Archiving an edit.

Why convert JPG to PNG at all

PNG is preferred whenever an image needs to be edited further or requires transparency later.

JPEG is a lossy format optimized for photographs, while PNG is lossless and supports transparency - so converting JPG to PNG is common before further editing (to avoid compounding compression artifacts with each save) or when a workflow or platform specifically expects a PNG file, even though the source photo itself has no transparency to add.

How PNG's lossless compression actually works

PNG doesn't skip compression to stay lossless - it just never throws pixel data away to get smaller.

PNG achieves its lossless guarantee through two layered, fully reversible techniques rather than by skipping compression altogether: first, a filtering pass predicts each pixel from its neighbors and stores only the difference, which tends to be small and repetitive; then general-purpose DEFLATE compression - the same algorithm used inside ZIP files - squeezes that filtered data further. Decompressing a PNG always reconstructs the exact original pixel values with nothing approximated. That's why converting a JPG to PNG can't undo any detail JPEG's lossy compression already discarded - PNG has no missing information to invent - but it does guarantee that from this point forward, saving the file again won't lose anything further.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to PNG online for free?

Choose your JPG file and the PNG version is ready to download instantly.

Will converting to PNG improve my photo's quality?

No - it can't restore detail already lost to JPEG compression. It simply stops any further lossy compression from this point on.

Why is my PNG file larger than the original JPG?

PNG's lossless compression is generally less effective than JPEG's lossy compression on photographic detail, so the file size typically increases.

Does this add transparency to my photo?

No - a JPG has no transparency information to begin with, so the PNG output is fully opaque, just like the source.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser - nothing is sent to a server.

Is PNG always bigger than JPEG for the same photo?

Usually yes for photographic content - PNG's lossless compression can't shrink complex, high-detail photos as effectively as JPEG's lossy compression can. PNG tends to win instead on flat-color images like screenshots or logos.

Can I convert multiple JPG files to PNG at once?

No - this handles one file at a time. Choose another JPG to convert it separately.
