What this tool does

Meta tags tell search engines and social networks what a page is about. Enter your title and description - aim for about 60 and 155 characters - plus a canonical URL and an image if you have one, and the tool writes the HTML tags, including Open Graph and Twitter Card. Copy the block into the head section of your page.

Builds the standard head tags from your inputs, escaping quotes and ampersands so the markup stays valid.

Checks title and description length and flags a missing canonical or non-absolute URLs.

How to use it

  1. Enter the page title and meta description.
  2. Add the canonical URL, and a social image URL if you have one.
  3. Choose the robots setting and fill in author, site name and handle if needed.
  4. Read the warnings under the output.
  5. Copy the tags and paste them inside your page's head element.

Why use this generator

Writes the title, description, canonical, robots, Open Graph and Twitter tags together, correctly escaped, in one block to paste in your head. The title and description are the text people see in search results, and the Open Graph tags decide how a link looks when shared. Missing, duplicated or over-long tags are among the most common and most easily fixed SEO problems.

Why we built it

We built the meta tag generator to write the title, description, canonical, robots and social tags together as ready-to-paste HTML. Preview the result with the SERP preview checker and extend sharing tags with the Open Graph generator.

Handy alongside this: the Schema Markup Generator.

Who this tool is for

  • Webmasters and bloggers launching pages
  • SEO staff
  • Developers templating head tags

When to use it

  • Setting up a new page, landing page or blog post.
  • Fixing titles that are cut off in search results.
  • Making a shared link show the right title, summary and image.
  • Marking a page noindex while it is being built.

How it works

The <title> and meta description feed search results. The canonical link names the one preferred address for a page. The robots meta tag controls indexing and link following. Open Graph (og:) tags feed Facebook, LinkedIn and most messaging apps, and the Twitter Card tags feed X.

Length is a guide, not a rule: results are cut by pixel width, not characters, so about 60 characters for a title and 155 for a description usually fit. Use a unique title and description on each page.

Search engines may rewrite your title or description when they judge another snippet to be a better match for the query. The tags are a strong suggestion, not a command.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

What are meta tags?

Snippets of HTML in a page's head that describe it to search engines and social networks - the title, description, canonical address, robots rules and social-sharing details.

How long should a meta description be?

About 120 to 155 characters, written as a short pitch for the page. Longer text is cut off in search results.

Do meta keywords still matter?

No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for years, and this tool does not generate it.

What does the canonical tag do?

It tells search engines which address is the preferred version of a page when the same content can be reached at several URLs.

What are Open Graph tags?

Tags beginning og: that control how a link appears when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn and many chat apps - the title, description and image.

Where do I paste the tags?

Inside the head element of your HTML page, before the closing head tag. In a CMS, use the theme's custom head field or an SEO plugin's fields.
