PDF to Image
Convert PDF pages to PNG or JPEG images - free.
Your PDF is rendered inside this page. It is never uploaded.
What this tool does
Choose a PDF, pick a format and resolution, and every page is rendered as an image you can preview and download - a single file for a one-page PDF, or a zip for several.
Renders every page of a PDF as a real image, at your choice of PNG or JPEG format and 1×, 2× or 3× resolution.
Shows a preview thumbnail of every rendered page before you download.
Downloads a single image file for a one-page PDF, or a zip containing every page for a multi-page one.
Rasterizes with pdf.js's own Canvas 2D render pipeline, so text, vector graphics and embedded images on a page are all drawn together exactly as a PDF viewer would show them.
Bundles every page into a single zip file with JSZip when there's more than one, so a multi-page PDF downloads as one file instead of triggering a separate download per page.
How to use it
- Choose a PDF.
- Pick a format and resolution.
- Preview the rendered pages, then download.
Why use this tool
Sometimes a page is needed as a picture for slides, social posts or a site. Rendering at a chosen resolution produces PNG or JPEG for each page.
Why we built it
We built the PDF to image tool to load its renderer only when a file is actually chosen, since the library is large. Extract text instead with PDF to text and rebuild a PDF from pictures with image to PDF.
If your task goes further, try the PDF Grayscale Converter.
Who this tool is for
- People who need a page as a picture
- Designers and bloggers reusing pages
- Anyone uploading to a site that accepts images only
When to use it
- Using a PDF page in a presentation.
- Sharing one page as an image.
- Creating thumbnails.
- Converting before OCR.
Why this needs a dedicated PDF renderer
Turning a PDF page into pixels is a fundamentally different job from reading or writing PDF structure.
Reading a PDF's pages and text is one thing; actually rasterizing a page's visual content into pixels - fonts, vector graphics, embedded images, all correctly laid out - is a much larger undertaking that needs a real PDF rendering engine, since no browser has one built in the way it does for JPEG or PNG. That's why this tool loads pdf.js, a genuinely large library, but only once you've actually chosen a file - every other page on this site, including this site's other PDF tools that only need to read or rebuild PDF structure, never downloads it.
What the resolution options actually control
A PDF page doesn't have pixels until something rasterizes it - the resolution setting decides how many.
A PDF page's dimensions are defined in points (72 to an inch), not pixels, so there's no such thing as a PDF's 'native resolution' the way there is for a photo. The resolution setting here is a scale multiplier passed straight to pdf.js's viewport calculation: 1x renders at roughly screen resolution, 2x doubles both the width and height of the resulting canvas, and 3x triples them - each step simply asks pdf.js to rasterize the same page into more pixels, at the cost of a slower render and a larger file.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Input | One PDF. |
| Options | PNG or JPEG and 1x, 2x or 3x resolution. |
| Output | Images for each page. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| An error mentions encryption | The PDF is password protected. | Unlock it first with the Unlock PDF tool. |
| Text is blurry | Resolution is low. | Choose 2x or 3x. |
| It is slow | High resolution and many pages. | Convert fewer pages or a lower scale. |
Assumptions and limitations
- An encrypted or password-protected PDF can't be read and rendered - it needs to be unlocked first.
- Higher resolution settings take longer to render and produce larger image files, especially on a long document - 1× is fastest for a quick preview, 3× for print-quality output.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF to images for free?
Choose your PDF, pick a format and resolution, and download the rendered pages - one image for a single page, a zip for several.
What resolution should I choose?
1× is fine for on-screen viewing, 2× gives sharper results for most uses, and 3× is best when the image needs to be printed.
Can I convert just one page?
This renders every page of the PDF - for extracting a specific page's content only, split the PDF to that single page first with this site's Split PDF tool.
Does this work with password-protected PDFs?
No - an encrypted PDF needs to be unlocked first before it can be read and rendered.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Rendering happens entirely in your browser - your file is never sent to a server.
Are all pages rendered at once or one at a time?
All pages render in one pass as soon as you choose a file, so every page's preview thumbnail is ready before you pick a format or download anything.
What happens to a multi-page PDF when I download?
Every page is bundled together into a single zip file using JSZip; a single-page PDF instead downloads directly as one image file.
