Photo to sketch

Your photo is processed inside this page and never uploaded.

What this tool does

Choose a photo and it is converted to a pencil sketch by greying it, inverting a copy, blurring that copy and blending it back with colour dodge. Use Line softness to move from fine pencil lines to soft shading, Darkness to strengthen the lines, and pick black-and-white or coloured pencil. Download the sketch as a PNG.

Applies the greyscale, invert, blur and colour-dodge sketch effect to your photo in the browser.

Lets you control softness, darkness and style, and downloads the result as PNG.

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo or drag it into the box.
  2. Adjust Line softness: lower for finer lines, higher for softer shading.
  3. Adjust Darkness and choose black-and-white or coloured pencil.
  4. Check the preview.
  5. Press Download PNG.

Why use this converter

Turns a photo into a pencil sketch using the classic grayscale, invert, blur and colour-dodge recipe, with line softness and darkness controls. A sketch effect gives a photo a hand-drawn look for profile pictures, cards, posters and craft projects. Doing it yourself with sliders gives more control than a one-click filter, and it stays private.

Why we built it

We built the photo to sketch tool with line softness and darkness controls and a coloured pencil option. Tweak the source with the image filter editor and turn it to text art with the image to ASCII art converter.

For a neighbouring job there is also the Blur Image.

How it works

The photo is converted to greyscale, the greyscale is inverted and the inverted copy is blurred with three box-blur passes. The blurred layer is then combined with the greyscale using colour dodge, which brightens flat areas to white and leaves edges dark, giving the pencil-line look. In coloured mode, the original colours are scaled by the sketch brightness.

Very large pictures are scaled so the longest side is 1,600 pixels, to keep the page responsive.
