Pyramid Chart Maker
Show a hierarchy or priority order as a pyramid - free, no signup.
What this tool does
Enter one level per line as label, value - smallest first - and this draws a pyramid chart: the smallest level sits at the top and each level below it widens, ending with the widest level at the base. That's the standard shape for a hierarchy, a priority order or a needs pyramid, where the top represents the smallest, most exclusive or highest-priority group and the base represents the largest.
Draws a pyramid chart from level data you paste or type - each level widens going down, ending with the widest band at the base.
Shows each level's value as a percentage of the base level, so relative sizes are visible at a glance.
Uses the same tapering-band rendering as the funnel chart maker, built from the opposite direction.
How to use it
- Enter one level per line as label, value, ordered smallest to largest.
- Add a chart title if you want one, and choose whether to show percentages.
- Pick a colour palette and export as PNG or SVG.
Why use this chart maker
Pyramids show levels of a hierarchy or priority, widening toward the base. A quick diagram makes the structure clear in slides and notes.
Why we built it
We built the pyramid chart maker to share its rendering with the funnel chart, built in the opposite direction, so they match visually. Compare with the funnel chart maker and the org chart maker.

What a pyramid chart is for
Hierarchy, priority and structure, not process flow.
A pyramid chart is the natural shape for anything organised as a hierarchy or a priority order: a needs pyramid with the most fundamental needs at the base and the most aspirational at the top, an organisational chart's headcount by level, or a priority list where a few things at the top matter most and a broad base supports them. The narrow-to-wide shape reads instantly as 'few and important' at the top, 'many and foundational' at the bottom.
It's visually the same tapering-band shape as a funnel chart, just built in the opposite direction - which is why a funnel chart maker and a pyramid chart maker on this site share the same underlying drawing logic. The difference is which end is widest and what the data represents: a funnel shows a shrinking PROCESS over time (visitors to customers), while a pyramid shows a STRUCTURE at a single point in time (levels of a hierarchy).
Formatting your data correctly
Enter one level per line as a label and a value, separated by a comma or tab, ordered from the smallest (top of the pyramid) to the largest (base of the pyramid). The order you type is the order drawn, top to bottom, so if the levels come out upside down, just reverse the order of the rows.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Input | Level names and values from top to base. |
| Output | A pyramid with each level as a percentage of the base. |
| Export | Save the chart. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Percentages seem off | They are against the widest level. | Reorder the data for a different baseline. |
| Shape is not a pyramid | Levels do not widen. | Check the values. |
| A row is skipped | It does not match the expected format. | Check the message listing unreadable lines and fix them. |
Assumptions and limitations
- Percentages are calculated against the base (largest) level, not level-to-level - reorder your data first if you want a different baseline.
- Works best with levels that genuinely widen in order; unordered data will still draw, but the pyramid shape won't mean much.
- The chart is drawn as SVG and exported to PNG at a fixed resolution suited to slides and documents, not large-format print.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a pyramid chart online for free?
Enter one level per line as label, value, ordered from smallest to largest, and the chart draws instantly. Download it as a PNG or SVG with no signup and no watermark.
What is a pyramid chart used for?
It shows a hierarchy, priority order or structure - like a needs pyramid, an organisational level breakdown, or a priority list - with the narrowest, most exclusive group at the top and the broadest group at the base.
What is the difference between a pyramid chart and a funnel chart?
They share the same tapering-band drawing, built in opposite directions: a pyramid is narrowest at the top and widest at the base, showing a static hierarchy. A funnel is widest at the top and narrowest at the bottom, showing a process losing volume over its stages.
How are the percentages calculated?
Against the base (largest, bottom) level - so a percentage tells you how big a level is relative to the widest part of the pyramid.
Can I paste data from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes - as long as each row has a label and a value separated by a comma or tab, a straight paste works.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The chart is drawn entirely in your browser using the data you type or paste - nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab clears it.
