Square Footage Calculator
List your rooms as length x width and get the total square footage, in feet, metres and yards.
What this tool does
Square footage is length times width. List each room on its own line - for example 12 x 14 - and this calculator multiplies each pair and adds them up, showing the total in square feet, square metres and square yards. You can give names with a colon, such as "Kitchen: 10 x 12", and choose feet, metres or another unit.
Parses a list of rooms written as length x width and calculates each area and the total.
Converts the total to square feet, square metres and square yards.
How to use it
- Choose the unit your measurements are in.
- Type each room on its own line as length x width, with an optional name and a colon.
- Read the total and the per-room table.
- Check for any lines it skipped.
Why use this calculator
Adds up any number of rooms in one go - one per line as length x width - and gives the total in square feet, square metres and square yards. Flooring, paint, carpet, heating and real-estate listings are all priced by area. Adding rooms by hand invites mistakes, and unit conversions make it worse.
Why we built it
We built the square footage calculator to add any number of rooms in one go, one per line as length x width, with the total in square feet, metres and yards. Turn it into a purchase with the flooring calculator or the tile calculator.

Who this tool is for
- Homeowners adding up rooms for flooring or paint
- Estate agents and tenants checking sizes
- Builders pricing floor area
When to use it
- Ordering flooring or carpet.
- Estimating paint, heating or air-conditioning needs.
- Checking the size of a home or an apartment.
- Comparing room sizes between listings.
How it works
Each room's area is length × width in the unit you chose. Everything is converted to square metres internally (using exact conversion factors) and then shown in square feet (× 10.7639), square metres and square yards (× 1.19599).
Example: 12 × 14 ft is 168 sq ft and 10 × 10 ft is 100 sq ft, so the total is 268 sq ft, or 24.9 m².
This is for rectangular areas. For L-shaped rooms, split them into two rectangles and list each. Measure to the inside of the walls for floor area.
A worked example
These are the values the calculator opens with, so you can see exactly what it does with them. Change any value on the page and the result updates; the figures below come from the same calculation.
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Rooms or areas - one per line, as length x width | Living room: 18 x 14 / Bedroom: 12 x 11.5 / Hall: 10 x 4 |
| Measurements are in | Feet |
With those inputs, the calculator returns:
- Total area: 430 sq ft
- Square feet: 430
- Square metres: 39.95
- Square yards: 47.78
- Areas counted: 3
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Rooms | One per line: length x width, with an optional "Name:" in front. Use x, × or *. |
| Unit | Feet, inches, yards, metres or centimetres. |
| Result | Total area and a table with each room. |
| Skipped lines | Lines that could not be read are listed so you can fix them. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A line is skipped | It does not have two numbers separated by x. | Write it as 12 x 14. |
| Total looks wrong | The unit does not match your measurements. | Choose the right unit. |
| L-shaped room | Only rectangles are supported. | List it as two rectangles. |
| Feet and inches such as 12'6" | Mixed units are not parsed. | Convert to decimals: 12.5. |
Assumptions and limitations
- Rectangular areas only.
- Decimal numbers, not feet-and-inches notation.
- It calculates area and does not allow for waste or openings.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate square footage?
Multiply length by width, both in feet. A 12 ft by 14 ft room is 168 square feet.
How do I calculate the square footage of several rooms?
Calculate each room and add them. This tool does it for you from a list of lengths and widths.
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Divide by 10.7639. 100 square feet is 9.29 square metres.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, calculate each and add them.
Should I include closets and hallways?
For flooring, yes; for a home's listed size, follow the local convention for what counts.
Is the data uploaded?
