Time Duration Calculator
Add or subtract several time durations to get one total.
What this tool does
A time duration calculator adds and subtracts multiple time durations given in hours, minutes and seconds, returning the result in total seconds, minutes, hours and clock-friendly form. Add 2h 15m, 47 minutes and 3 minutes 30 seconds and it returns 2 hours 6 minutes, or 7,590 seconds. Every duration converts to seconds first, the arithmetic runs there, and the answer converts back - which is what stops the minutes from running past sixty and quietly corrupting the total.
Adds and subtracts multiple time durations given in hours, minutes and seconds.
Returns the result in total seconds, minutes, hours and clock-friendly form.
Handles subtraction that crosses zero, showing the result as negative.
Works in both directions: a running total up, or one duration taken from another.
How to use it
- Enter each duration in hours, minutes and seconds.
- Mark a row as subtract to take it off the total.
- Rows without a minus sign add.
- Read the total in hours and minutes, plus seconds and decimal hours.
- The running total after each row shows where the arithmetic stands.
Why use this calculator
Adding and subtracting multiple time durations by hand fails in a predictable way: minutes carry wrongly, seconds overflow past sixty, and negative results get silently clamped. Converting everything to seconds first removes the entire class of error. Whether the durations are project logs, media timestamps, training segments or a receipt of small tasks, the seconds-first approach is what makes the total trustworthy.
Why we built it
We built the time duration calculator to show the running total after each row, because that is how the arithmetic gets checked - a wrong row shows up as a jump. The work-hours-calculator applies the same addition to shifts with breaks and overtime, the date-difference-calculator spans calendar dates rather than clock durations, and the minutes-to-hours-converter handles a single conversion. The online-stopwatch measures the durations this tool then totals.
The speed-distance-time-calculator uses durations as an input, and the time-converter moves between time units generally.
Who this tool is for
- Anyone adding up timesheet or project-log segments
- Editors totalling media timestamps
- Coaches and trainers summing session blocks
- Students checking a multi-step time problem
When to use it
- When totalling several blocks of time.
- Subtracting a break or a pause from a span.
- Converting a long total into hours and minutes.
- Checking a duration that crosses midnight.
How it is calculated
Each row converts to seconds: hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds. Added rows sum, subtracted rows deduct, and the grand total converts back - seconds ÷ 3600 for hours, remainder ÷ 60 for minutes. Decimal hours divide the total seconds by 3600.
Worked example: 2h 15m + 47m − 3m 30s. In seconds: 8,100 + 2,820 − 210 = 10,710, which is 2h 58m 30s, or 2.975 decimal hours.
Sixty, not one hundred. Time arithmetic is sexagesimal: 90 minutes is 1 hour 30 minutes, never 1.90 hours. The seconds-first method enforces the carry automatically, which is why the total cannot drift.
Reference conversions
| Duration | Seconds | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | 60 | 0.0167 |
| 15 minutes | 900 | 0.25 |
| 30 minutes | 1,800 | 0.5 |
| 1 hour | 3,600 | 1.0 |
| 1 day | 86,400 | 24 |
| 1 week | 604,800 | 168 |
A worked example
These are the values the calculator opens with, so you can see exactly what it does with them. Change any value on the page and the result updates; the figures below come from the same calculation.
| Row | Duration | Operation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2h 15m 00s | Add |
| 2 | 0h 47m 00s | Add |
| 3 | 0h 03m 30s | Subtract |
With those rows, the calculator returns:
- Total: 2h 58m 30s
- Total seconds: 10,710
- Decimal hours: 2.975
- Running total after each row: 2h 15m → 3h 02m → 2h 58m 30s
Midnight and long spans
Durations themselves do not have a date, so a span like 22:00 to 06:00 is entered as an 8-hour duration rather than a clock range - the calculator totals durations, not timestamps. When you need the difference between two dated moments, the date difference calculator covers the calendar side, and the work hours calculator handles the overnight shift case directly.
| Total seconds | Readable form |
|---|---|
| 5,400 | 1h 30m |
| 12,345 | 3h 25m 45s |
| 90,000 | 25h — or 1 day 1h |
| 3,600,000 | 1,000h |
What you enter, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Durations | Hours, minutes and seconds per row. |
| Operation | Add or subtract for each row. |
| Result | Grand total in hours-minutes-seconds, seconds, decimal hours and running totals. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes past 60 in a manual total | Decimal arithmetic on sexagesimal values. | Work in seconds; the calculator carries correctly. |
| Negative total after subtraction | Subtractions exceed the additions. | Expected - the calculator shows the sign rather than clamping. |
| Total seems an hour out | Daylight saving in a dated calculation. | Durations ignore the clock; dated spans need the date tool. |
| Decimal hours look odd | Minutes divided by 100 instead of 60. | Divide by 60: 30 min is 0.5, never 0.3. |
Assumptions and limitations
- Operates on durations, not timestamps - dates and time zones are out of scope.
- Does not apply daylight saving adjustments, which affect dated spans only.
- Assumes entered minutes and seconds are under 60 for clean reading, though larger values still work.
- For calendar arithmetic, use the date difference calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add up hours and minutes?
Convert everything to seconds, add, then convert back. 2h 15m is 8,100 seconds and 47 minutes is 2,820; together 10,920 seconds, which is 3 hours 2 minutes. Working in seconds enforces the 60-minute carry that manual addition gets wrong.
How do I subtract one duration from another?
Convert both to seconds and subtract: 3h 10m (11,400s) minus 45 minutes (2,700s) leaves 8,700 seconds, or 2h 25m. If the subtrahend is larger, the result is negative - the calculator shows that rather than hiding it.
How do I convert a duration to total seconds?
Hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds. One hour is 3,600 seconds, one minute is 60, and a day is 86,400. Converting to seconds first is the reliable way to add or compare durations of mixed units.
How do I add times that cross midnight?
Durations do not carry a date, so enter the crossing span as one duration: 22:00 to 06:00 is simply 8 hours. For a dated calculation spanning midnight, use the date difference calculator, which understands calendar days.
How do I calculate elapsed time between two times?
Subtract the start from the end. If the end is earlier, add 24 hours to the end to account for the following day: 22:30 to 00:15 is 1 hour 45 minutes. For spans across several days, use the date difference calculator instead.
How do I express a long duration in hours and minutes?
Divide the total seconds by 3600 for hours, then divide the remainder by 60 for minutes. 90,000 seconds is 25 hours — expressible as 25h or as 1 day 1h. The calculator returns the hours-minutes-seconds form and the raw seconds so both readings are available.
