What this tool does

A vCard is a contact in a standard file format. Enter a name and any phone numbers, email, website and address, then download the .vcf file. Opening it adds the contact to an iPhone, an Android phone, Outlook or Google Contacts. The file is made in your browser and you can paste its text into a QR code generator.

Writes a vCard 3.0 contact with the fields you fill in, in the order and format contact apps expect.

Escapes commas and semicolons, folds long lines, and offers the file as a download or as copyable text.

How to use it

  1. Enter a first and last name, or an organisation.
  2. Add phone numbers, email, website and address as needed.
  3. Check the vCard text on the right.
  4. Press Download .vcf, then open the file on your phone or computer to import it.

Why use this generator

Builds a vCard 3.0 .vcf contact file with name, organisation, phones, email, website, address and note. A .vcf file adds a whole contact in one tap and avoids retyping and typos. It is the standard way to share a contact in an email, on a website or in a QR code.

Why we built it

We built the vCard generator to make a vCard 3.0 file with name, organisation, phones, email and website that imports into any phone or email app. Turn the card into a code with the QR code generator and create invites with the ICS file generator.

Who this tool is for

  • Professionals sharing contact details
  • Event organisers and shops
  • Anyone making a contact card for a QR code

When to use it

  • Sharing your contact details as a downloadable card.
  • Giving customers a one-tap way to save a business's phone, email and address.
  • Moving a contact between phones or apps.
  • Producing the text for a contact QR code.

How it works

A vCard is plain text between BEGIN:VCARD and END:VCARD lines. N holds the structured name (last;first), FN the display name, ORG and TITLE the work details, TEL and EMAIL the numbers and addresses with a type, URL the website, and ADR the address as seven semicolon-separated parts.

Commas, semicolons and line breaks inside values are escaped with a backslash, and lines longer than 75 bytes are folded, as the standard requires.

This writes version 3.0, which is accepted by iOS, Android, Outlook, Google Contacts and nearly everything else. Photos and custom fields are not included.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

What is a vCard?

A standard file format (.vcf) for sharing a contact: name, phone numbers, email, address and more. Phones and email apps can import it directly.

How do I create a VCF file?

Fill in the contact details and press Download .vcf. Open the file on your phone or computer to add the contact.

Can I put a vCard in a QR code?

Yes. Copy the vCard text and paste it into the QR code generator; scanning the code offers to save the contact.

Which apps can open a .vcf file?

iPhone and Android contacts, Outlook, Google Contacts, Apple Contacts and almost any other address book.

Does it include a photo?

No. Photos make the file much larger, so this generator writes text fields only.

Is my contact information uploaded?

No. The file is generated in your browser.
