What this tool does

To convert VTT to SRT, open the .vtt file here or paste its text. The tool drops the WEBVTT header and any notes, numbers each cue, changes timestamp dots to commas and writes standard SubRip. You can also shift all times by a number of seconds. Then download the .srt file.

Reads the cues of a WebVTT file, ignoring the header, NOTE and STYLE blocks and cue settings, and writes them as numbered SRT.

Optionally shifts all times, and reports the cue count and the end time.

How to use it

  1. Choose your .vtt file, or paste the caption text.
  2. Optionally enter a shift in seconds.
  3. Check the SRT result and the cue count.
  4. Press Download .srt or Copy SRT.

Why use this converter

Converts WebVTT to SRT, numbering every cue and turning timestamp dots into commas, ready for video editors and players. Many video editors, media players and upload forms accept SRT but not WebVTT. Converting by hand means renumbering every cue and changing every timestamp.

Why we built it

We built the VTT to SRT converter to number every cue and turn timestamp dots into commas, with an optional time shift. Convert the other way with the SRT to VTT converter and check text with the word counter.

Who this tool is for

  • Editors needing SRT for video software
  • Creators uploading captions
  • Teachers converting caption files

When to use it

  • Importing web captions into a video editor.
  • Using subtitles from a streaming or web player in a media player that expects SRT.
  • Uploading captions to a platform that only takes .srt.
  • Correcting a constant timing offset while converting.

How it works

A WebVTT cue may have an identifier, a time range written 00:01.500 --> 00:02.000 (the hour is optional) with optional settings such as align:start, and the text. An SRT cue is always a number, a range with hours and a comma, and the text.

The converter parses each cue, discards the settings, pads short timestamps to hours, numbers the cues from 1 and writes them as SRT. A shift that would make a time negative is held at zero.

Positioning and styling in WebVTT have no SRT equivalent and are dropped; the text and timing are preserved.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert VTT to SRT?

Open the .vtt file here and press Download .srt. The tool numbers the cues and changes the timestamps to the SRT format.

What is lost when converting VTT to SRT?

Positioning, styles and other WebVTT features. The text and the timing are kept.

Can it handle timestamps without hours?

Yes. WebVTT allows mm:ss.mmm; the converter writes full hh:mm:ss,mmm in the SRT.

Can I shift the timing while converting?

Yes. Enter a number of seconds - negative to move earlier - and every cue moves by that amount.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion is done in your browser.

Can I go back from SRT to VTT?

Yes - the SRT to VTT converter does the reverse.
