YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Get every thumbnail size for a YouTube video - free, instant.
What this tool does
Paste a YouTube video URL and every thumbnail resolution YouTube actually generated for it - from a small default size up to 1280x720 - appears instantly, each with its own download button.
Reads the video ID out of any YouTube URL shape - a full watch link, a youtu.be short link, an embed link, or a Shorts link.
Shows every standard thumbnail resolution YouTube publishes for that video, from the smallest default size up to the maximum resolution version.
Automatically hides the max-resolution option when a video doesn't have one - older or non-widescreen uploads often don't - instead of showing YouTube's small grey placeholder image as if it were real.
Recognizes the video ID from a single URL, watch links, youtu.be short links, embed links, and Shorts links alike, or a bare 11-character video ID pasted on its own.
Downloads a real local JPEG file by re-drawing the chosen thumbnail onto a canvas when the CDN's CORS headers allow it, and falls back to simply opening the image in a new tab if that isn't possible.
How to use it
- Paste a YouTube video URL.
- Pick the resolution you want.
- Download it.
Why use this tool
A video's thumbnail is published in several sizes, and finding the right one by editing URLs is awkward. Showing every size from a pasted link makes it quick.
Why we built it
We built the thumbnail downloader to hide the maximum-resolution option when a video does not have one, instead of showing YouTube's small placeholder. Resize your own thumbnails with the YouTube thumbnail resizer and crop with the image cropper.

Why no YouTube account or API key is needed
Every video's thumbnails already sit at a public, predictable web address.
YouTube publishes each video's thumbnails as ordinary public image files at a predictable address built from the video's ID - the same address your browser already loads when a thumbnail appears anywhere on YouTube itself. This tool simply works out that address from the URL you paste and links straight to it, which is why no API key, login or per-video lookup is needed - it isn't retrieving anything YouTube wasn't already serving publicly.
How a missing max-resolution thumbnail is actually detected
YouTube doesn't return an error for a thumbnail that doesn't exist - it quietly serves a placeholder instead.
When a video has no 1280x720 thumbnail, requesting its maxresdefault.jpg address doesn't fail or return a 404 - YouTube answers with a small grey placeholder image at exactly 120x90 pixels, same as its smallest real thumbnail size. This tool loads that file like any other, then checks the image's actual pixel dimensions once it arrives: if a 'max resolution' request comes back at exactly 120x90, that's the placeholder rather than a genuine photo, and the tool hides that card instead of presenting a blank grey square as a real thumbnail.

Assumptions and limitations
- The maximum-resolution thumbnail (1280x720) doesn't exist for every video - older uploads and some non-widescreen videos only have the smaller sizes, and this tool hides that option automatically rather than showing YouTube's placeholder image as if it were real.
- This reads a public video's existing thumbnails - it can't generate a custom thumbnail or access a private or unlisted video's images if YouTube itself restricts them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I download a YouTube thumbnail for free?
Paste the video's URL and every available resolution appears with its own download button.
Do I need a YouTube API key?
No - thumbnails are public image files at a predictable address, so no API key or login is needed.
Why is the max-resolution option missing for some videos?
Not every video has a 1280x720 thumbnail - older or non-widescreen uploads often only have the smaller sizes, and this tool hides the max-resolution option automatically when that's the case.
What URL formats work?
A full youtube.com watch link, a youtu.be short link, an embed link, or a Shorts link - the video ID is read out of any of them.
Is this uploaded anywhere or connected to my YouTube account?
No. This only reads the public thumbnail images for the video you specify - there's no login and nothing is uploaded.
What file format do the downloads use?
A JPEG - the tool draws the chosen thumbnail onto a canvas and exports it at 0.95 quality, matching the format YouTube itself uses for thumbnails.
Does the 'Copy thumbnail URL' button always copy a working image address?
It copies the maxresdefault (1280x720) address specifically - if that particular video has no max-resolution thumbnail, the copied URL will point to YouTube's grey placeholder image rather than a real photo, so check that the max-resolution card is actually showing before you rely on the copied link.
