Backwards Text Generator
Reverse your text's character order - free, copy and paste.
Every other style
What this tool does
Type or paste your text and it's instantly reversed character by character - 'Hello' becomes 'olleH'. Every letter keeps its normal shape; only the order changes. For text that's also flipped upside down (rotated glyphs, not just reversed order), use the upside down text generator instead.
Reverses the character order of your text, letter shapes unchanged - genuine mirror-writing order, not a rotated flip.
Works as plain text, so it pastes correctly anywhere plain text is accepted.
Shows a live grapheme (visual character) count and word count as you type, so you can confirm nothing was dropped in the reversal.
Builds a shareable link that carries your text after '#' in the URL - a part of the address browsers never send to a server, so sharing the link doesn't expose your text to anyone in between.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text.
- Copy the reversed result.
- Paste it anywhere - it's ordinary text.
Why use this generator
Reversed text is used for puzzles, jokes and mirror-writing effects, and reversing by hand risks dropped characters. A reverser keeps every character and shows counts so nothing is lost.
Why we built it
We built the backwards text generator to reverse the character order only, keeping each letter's normal shape, which is different from upside-down text. Test palindromes with the palindrome checker and flip letters with the upside down text generator.
Handy alongside this: the Lorem Ipsum Generator and the Reading & Speaking Time Calculator.
Who this tool is for
- Puzzle makers and teachers
- Social media users
- Anyone checking a palindrome
When to use it
- Making puzzles or codes with reversed words.
- Creating a joke or a secret message.
- Checking palindromes.
- Testing text handling.
Backwards text vs. upside-down text
Two different effects that are often confused for each other.
Backwards (mirror) text reverses the ORDER of characters only - each letter keeps its normal shape, so 'Hello' becomes 'olleH'. Upside-down text does something different: it substitutes each letter for a Unicode character that LOOKS rotated 180 degrees, and also reverses the order, so the result reads correctly when you physically turn the screen. If you want the rotated-letter effect, use the upside down text generator instead - this tool only reverses order.
Where character-by-character reversal can misfire
Reversal works on individual Unicode code points, which isn't quite the same thing as a visual character for a subset of emoji.
Plain letters, digits and most punctuation are each exactly one Unicode code point, so reversing them character by character always gives the expected mirror-image result. A handful of emoji are not: a country flag is built from two separate code points, and a skin-tone or family emoji is several code points joined with an invisible zero-width joiner - all displayed by your device as a single glyph. Because reversal moves each code point independently, a flag or joined emoji can come out as a different, jumbled, or split-apart result instead of the same glyph in reverse. Plain text - the overwhelming majority of what this tool is used for - is unaffected.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Input | Any text. |
| Output | The characters in reverse order. |
| Counts | Visual character and word counts to confirm nothing was lost. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| It is not mirror-flipped letters | Only order is reversed. | Use the upside-down generator for rotation. |
| Emoji look odd | Combined characters may be separated. | The tool keeps visual characters together. |
| Reads as nonsense | That is expected. | Reverse again to restore. |
Assumptions and limitations
- This reverses character order only - it does not rotate or flip individual letter shapes. See the upside down text generator for that effect.
- Screen readers will read the reversed text as written, which will not make sense as spoken words.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reverse text online for free?
Type or paste your text and the reversed version appears instantly - copy it and paste it anywhere.
What's the difference between this and upside-down text?
This reverses character order only, keeping every letter's normal shape. Upside-down text also substitutes each letter for a rotated-looking Unicode character. They're different effects with different tools.
Is this a font?
No. It's ordinary text with the character order reversed, so it survives copy and paste anywhere plain text works.
Will it work on social media?
Usually in bios, posts and comments, since it's plain text with no special characters involved.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Reversing happens entirely in your browser - nothing is sent to a server.
Does this work with emoji?
Most single-codepoint emoji reverse correctly. Emoji built from more than one Unicode code point - flag emoji, and skin-tone or family emoji joined with a zero-width joiner - can come out looking different, because each code point moves independently rather than as one visual unit.
Can I share a reversed result without sending my text to a server?
Yes - the Copy link button builds a URL with your text after '#', a part of the address browsers never transmit to a server, so opening that link elsewhere restores the text without it ever passing through us.
