Palindrome Checker

Type a word or phrase, or a list, to see which are palindromes.

PhraseChecked asPalindrome?

What this tool does

A palindrome reads the same forwards and backwards, such as "level" or, ignoring spaces and punctuation, "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama". Type a word or a phrase per line above, choose what to ignore, and see which are palindromes.

Reverses each line after optional cleaning and compares it with the original.

Shows the cleaned form it tested and totals the palindromes.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste one or more phrases, one per line.
  2. Choose whether to ignore case, spaces and punctuation.
  3. Read the verdict for each line.
  4. Copy the result or download a CSV.

Why use this checker

Checks one word or a whole list of phrases, one per line, and shows the cleaned version each was tested as. Longer palindromes are hard to verify by eye because spaces and commas get in the way. Normalising first, then comparing, answers the question reliably and lets you test a whole list at once.

Why we built it

We built the palindrome checker to let you decide whether case, spaces and punctuation count, and to show the cleaned text it tested. Reverse text with the backwards text generator and check letters with the pangram checker.

Who this tool is for

  • Teachers and students
  • Puzzle and word-game fans
  • Programmers practising string problems

When to use it

  • Checking a word game or a puzzle answer.
  • Testing a phrase for a poem or a name.
  • Programming exercises and interviews.
  • Teachers checking student examples.

How it works

Each line is cleaned according to your options: accents are removed (é becomes e), then case, punctuation and spaces are dropped if you ticked those. The cleaned string is compared with its reverse. An empty result is never counted as a palindrome.

Examples that pass with the defaults: "Was it a car or a cat I saw?", "Never odd or even" and "Madam, I'm Adam".

Frequently asked questions

What is a palindrome?

A word, phrase or number that reads the same forwards and backwards.

Do spaces and punctuation count?

By convention they are ignored for phrases; you can change that with the options.

Is a single letter a palindrome?

Yes, by the usual definition, and so is any number like 7 or 121.

Can I test a list?

Yes, put one phrase on each line.

Does it handle accents?

Yes, accents are removed before testing when you ignore punctuation.

Is my text or file sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing leaves the page.
