Flashcard Maker
Paste front and back lines and get a flashcard deck you can flip, shuffle and print.
One pipe splits the card. Lines without a pipe are skipped and counted.
What this tool does
A flashcard maker turns pasted lines into a study deck. Each line holds the front of the card, a pipe, then the back, and every line with a pipe becomes one card you click to flip, step through with previous and next, and shuffle so recall is tested rather than recognition. The deck prints as a grid of fronts followed by a grid of backs, which is how two-sided study cards are cut. Nothing is uploaded - the deck is built in your browser and disappears with the tab.
Pastes front | back lines and builds one card per line, skipping any line without a pipe.
Flips a card on click and walks the deck with previous, next and a card counter.
Shuffles the deck for recall practice and prints every front first, then every back.
Copies the deck back out as the same front | back lines, so it round-trips into any study app.
How to use it
- Write one card per line: the front, a pipe, then the back.
- Paste the lines into the box - the deck builds as you type.
- Click the card face to flip it, and use previous and next to move through the deck.
- Press Shuffle to reorder the deck, or Original order to put it back.
- Print - fronts on one page, backs on the next - or copy the lines back out.
Why use this tool
Revision that leans on re-reading a page feels productive and tests nothing. A flashcard forces the retrieval step: see the front, say the answer, check the back. The usual obstacle is making the cards - cutting cardstock, writing both sides, finding the one that slid under the desk. Turning a list you already typed into a deck removes that obstacle entirely, because the deck is only ever as good as the text you paste.
Why we built it
We built this flashcard maker because the gap between a list of facts and a usable deck is pure formatting: front, back, one card per line. Paste that list and the deck is ready - click to flip, shuffle to break the order you memorised by accident, print to take it offline. The Quiz Generator turns the same material into a printable test with its own answer key, and the Worksheet Builder lays it out as numbered questions with answer lines.
When the questions themselves are the missing piece, the Random Trivia Generator supplies ready-made ones to paste in.
Who this tool is for
- Students revising vocabulary, anatomy, dates or formulas
- Teachers and tutors building a printable card set for a class
- Language learners drilling word pairs in both directions
- Anyone holding a list of facts who wants cards without a spreadsheet
How a line becomes a card
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Line split | The first pipe separates the front from the back |
| Lines without a pipe | Skipped, and counted so nothing vanishes silently |
| Deck order | As pasted, until you press Shuffle |
| Flip | Click the card face to show the other side |
| Fronts in a grid, a page break, then the backs in the same grid |
A worked example
Load the sample and you get a six-card cell structure deck built from seven pasted lines, because the heading line has no pipe to split it. The summary and counter read like this:
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Cards built | 6 |
| Lines skipped | 1 |
| First card, front | Photosynthesis |
| First card, back | Conversion of light energy into chemical energy |
| Counter on load | Card 1 of 6 |
What you enter, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Pasted lines | Front, pipe, back - one card per line, any subject. |
| Deck controls | Flip on click, previous, next, shuffle, card counter. |
| Result | A deck on screen, a two-sided print grid, and copyable front | back lines. |
Nothing you paste leaves the page. The deck is built in your browser and is gone when you close the tab.
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A line is missing from the deck | It has no pipe for the tool to split on. | Add a pipe between front and back, or delete the line. |
| One side of a card is empty | Two pipes in a row, or a trailing pipe. | Keep exactly one pipe with text on both sides of it. |
| The cards are not in your pasted order | Shuffle was pressed before printing. | Press Original order to put the pasted sequence back. |
| A long back runs past the printed card | The back is several sentences long. | Split it into two cards, one idea each. |
Assumptions and limitations
- Cards are built from the text you paste - no content is suggested or generated for you.
- One pipe splits a card, so a second pipe in the same line leaves extra text on the front.
- Fronts and backs print at a fixed size - trimming to card blanks is left to you.
- The deck is not saved: reload the page and it is gone, so copy the lines out first.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make flashcards from a list?
Paste one card per line as front, pipe, back. Every line with a pipe becomes a card, and lines without one are skipped and counted so you can spot them.
Can I print the flashcards?
Yes. Print puts all the fronts in a grid on the first page, then breaks to a new page with all the backs in the same grid, so the two sides cut to the same size.
How do I shuffle the deck?
Press Shuffle to randomise the order, which stops you remembering position instead of content. Press Original order to return to the sequence you pasted.
What happens to lines without a pipe?
They are skipped, and the Lines skipped counter tells you how many. A deck heading or a note line therefore never becomes a broken card.
Does my content get uploaded?
No. The deck is parsed and built in your browser, the Copy and Print actions run locally, and nothing is sent anywhere.
Is the flashcard maker free?
Yes, completely free with no account and no limits. Paste as many lines as your clipboard holds and print as many times as you like.
