Flatten PDF
Turn a filled-in PDF form into a fixed document by baking the field values into the page.
Your PDF is flattened inside this page and never uploaded.
What this tool does
Flattening a PDF merges its interactive form fields into the page content, so what was typed in becomes part of the page and can no longer be edited. Choose a filled-in PDF form and this tool flattens every field and gives you a fixed copy.
Finds the fillable fields in your PDF - text boxes, check boxes, drop-downs and so on - and draws their current values onto the page.
Removes the interactive fields, so the result is a plain document, and reports how many were flattened.
How to use it
- Choose a PDF that has been filled in.
- The tool lists how many form fields it found.
- If it found fields, they are flattened immediately.
- Check the summary of field types.
- Press Download flattened PDF.
Why use this PDF flattener
Bakes what was typed into a form into the page itself, so it can no longer be edited or changed by whoever opens the file. A filled-in form is easy to change by accident or on purpose. Flattening fixes the answers into the page, which is what you want before sending a signed or completed form for the record.
Why we built it
We built the flatten PDF tool to bake typed form values into the page so the file can no longer be edited. Fill forms first with the PDF form filler and shrink the result with compress PDF.
Handy alongside this: the Unlock PDF.
Who this tool is for
- People sending completed forms that must not be changed
- Offices archiving filled forms
- Applicants submitting final copies
When to use it
- Sending a completed form that nobody should alter.
- Making a filled form display the same in every PDF viewer.
- Reducing a form to a simple page before printing or archiving.
- Preparing a PDF that other tools cannot handle because of its fields.
How it works
A PDF form stores its fields as interactive objects layered over the page. Flattening draws each field’s appearance - its text, tick or selection - into the page content and then removes the interactive objects.
After flattening, the values can still be read and printed, but there is nothing left to click into or change.
Flattening cannot be undone in the file you download. Keep your original fillable version if you might need to edit the answers later.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Input | A PDF with fillable form fields. |
| Output | The same pages with the values fixed into them and no fields. |
| Report | Number of fields flattened and their types. |
| Where it goes | Your Downloads folder. Nothing is uploaded. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "No fillable form fields" | The PDF has no interactive fields. | If the text was typed on top it is already part of the page. |
| Values missing after flatten | The fields were empty or hidden. | Fill the form first, then flatten. |
| Could not read the file | It is password-protected or damaged. | Unlock or repair it first. |
| Signature field still looks interactive | A digital signature is a different object. | Flatten does not apply signatures cryptographically. |
Assumptions and limitations
- Digital signatures are not created or validated.
- Flattening is permanent in the downloaded copy.
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
- Unusual or non-standard form fields may render differently.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to flatten a PDF?
Interactive form fields are merged into the page content, so what was typed becomes part of the page and can no longer be edited.
How do I flatten a PDF form?
Choose the filled-in PDF. The tool flattens all its fields automatically and you download the result.
Will I be able to edit the form afterwards?
No. The downloaded copy has no fields. Keep the original fillable file if you may need to change answers.
Why does it say there are no form fields?
The PDF is not an interactive form - any text on it is already part of the page and there is nothing to flatten.
Is my form uploaded anywhere?
No. The form is flattened in your browser and the file is never sent to a server.
