HTML to Markdown Converter
Paste HTML and get clean Markdown back - headings, links, lists, tables and code blocks included.
What this tool does
To convert HTML to Markdown, paste the HTML into the left box and the Markdown appears on the right. Headings become #, bold and italic become ** and *, links and images keep their addresses, and lists and tables are rebuilt in Markdown form. Scripts and styles are dropped. It runs in your browser.
Parses the HTML you paste and writes the equivalent Markdown for each element it recognises.
Removes scripts, styles and embedded objects, and keeps only the text and structure.
How to use it
- Paste your HTML into the left box - a whole page, or just the part you need.
- Read the Markdown on the right.
- Check tables, nested lists and links in the result.
- Press Copy Markdown or Download .md.
Why use this converter
Turns pasted HTML into clean Markdown: headings, bold, italics, links, images, lists, tables and code blocks. Markdown is easier to read, edit and keep in version control than HTML, but converting a page by hand means stripping every tag. Doing it mechanically keeps the content and drops the markup.
Why we built it
We built the HTML to Markdown converter to cover headings, links, lists, tables and code blocks. Go the other way with the Markdown to HTML converter and build tables with the Markdown table generator.
Who this tool is for
- Writers moving content into Markdown tools
- Developers and technical authors
- Bloggers migrating posts
When to use it
- Moving web content into a README, wiki or static-site generator.
- Cleaning up copied rich text before editing it as plain text.
- Archiving the text of a page in a portable format.
- Turning an email template or help article into editable notes.
How it works
The HTML is parsed into a document tree, then walked from top to bottom. Headings, paragraphs, quotes, lists, code blocks and tables are written as the matching Markdown blocks, and inline elements such as strong, em, code, links and images are written in place.
Anything with no Markdown form - a div, a span, a custom element - keeps its text and loses its tag. Characters that Markdown treats as syntax, such as * and _ inside ordinary text, are backslash-escaped so they survive.
Styling, colours, classes, forms, and layout are not part of Markdown and are not carried over. If the layout matters, keep the HTML.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| HTML | A whole page or a fragment. Scripts, styles and iframes are ignored. |
| Markdown | Headings, emphasis, links, images, lists, quotes, code blocks and tables written as Markdown. |
| Copy | Copies the Markdown to the clipboard. |
| Download | Saves the Markdown as a .md file. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Table cells look cramped | Markdown tables are single-line cells with no merged cells. | Edit the result by hand, or simplify the HTML table first. |
| Extra backslashes in the text | Characters like * and _ are escaped so they are not read as formatting. | Remove the backslashes you do not need after checking they are not formatting. |
| Nested lists are flattened oddly | Very deep or irregular list nesting has no exact Markdown equivalent. | Tidy the HTML list structure first, or fix the indents afterwards. |
| An image is missing | Its source was a data: or javascript: address, which is dropped. | Use a normal http, https or relative image address. |
Assumptions and limitations
- Content only: styling, layout, forms and scripts are not converted.
- Merged table cells and complex nested structures are simplified.
- Relative links are kept relative; the tool does not know the page they came from.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert HTML to Markdown?
Paste the HTML into the left box and the Markdown appears on the right. Copy it or download it as a .md file.
Does it keep links and images?
Yes. Links become [text](address) and images become , unless the address is a javascript: or data: URL.
What happens to tables?
Tables are rebuilt as pipe tables with a header row and a divider. Merged or multi-line cells are simplified.
Are scripts and styles kept?
No. Script and style contents are dropped, and the HTML is parsed without being run.
Can I convert a whole web page?
Yes, if you paste its HTML source. Navigation and footers are included as text, so you may want to paste only the article section.
Is my HTML uploaded?
No. It is parsed and converted inside your browser.
