Markdown Table Generator
Paste a grid of cells and get a Markdown table with the alignment you choose.
What this tool does
Paste rows copied from a spreadsheet, or type them with commas, pipes or semicolons, and the generator writes a Markdown table with a header, a separator row and aligned columns. Choose left, centre or right alignment and copy the result into a README, an issue or a document.
Reads a pasted grid, detects the separator and writes a Markdown table.
Escapes characters that would break a table and lets you set alignment and padding.
How to use it
- Paste cells from a spreadsheet, or type rows.
- Leave the separator on automatic or choose one.
- Set the alignment and whether the first row is a header.
- Check the table on the right.
- Press Copy Markdown or Download.
Why use this generator
Paste cells copied from Excel or Sheets, or type with commas, pipes or semicolons, and get a ready Markdown table. Markdown tables are tedious to type because every cell needs a pipe and the separator row must match. Converting from a spreadsheet gives a correct table in seconds, ready for a README, wiki or document.
Why we built it
We built the Markdown table generator to escape pipes and line breaks and to set alignment. Convert in the other direction with the HTML to Markdown converter and make an HTML table with the HTML table generator.
Who this tool is for
- Developers writing READMEs and docs
- Bloggers using Markdown
- Students and writers moving data from spreadsheets
When to use it
- Adding a table to a GitHub README or issue.
- Moving data from Excel or Sheets into Markdown notes.
- Writing documentation or a blog post in Markdown.
- Cleaning up a table to line up its columns.
How it works
Each row becomes a line of cells between pipes. A second row of dashes marks the header, and a colon on the left, right or both sides sets the alignment: :--- left, :---: centre, ---: right. A pipe inside a cell is escaped with a backslash and line breaks become <br>.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Input | Rows of cells separated by tab, comma, pipe or semicolon. |
| Options | Separator, alignment, header row and padding. |
| Output | A GitHub-flavoured Markdown table to copy or download as .md. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Only one column appears | The wrong separator was detected. | Choose the separator manually. |
| Table does not render | The viewer does not support tables or a blank line is missing before it. | Add a blank line above the table and check support. |
| Cells with commas split | Commas are being treated as separators. | Choose Tab or quote the cell in CSV. |
Assumptions and limitations
- Markdown tables cannot merge cells or hold block content.
- Alignment support depends on the viewer.
