PDF to Word

Turn the text of a PDF into an editable Word document, with paragraphs and headings rebuilt.

PDF to Word

This recovers the text of a PDF into an editable Word file. Images, tables and exact layout are not carried over, and a scanned PDF with no text layer has nothing to convert.

What this tool does

A PDF to Word converter turns a PDF into an editable document. This one reads the PDF’s text layer, rebuilds lines and paragraphs from where the words sit on the page, marks large text as headings, and writes a real .docx. It recovers the text, not the exact layout, images or tables.

Reads every word in the PDF with its position and size, joins them into lines and paragraphs, and treats noticeably larger text as headings.

Writes a .docx file you can open in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, with an optional page break wherever each PDF page began.

How to use it

  1. Choose your PDF file.
  2. Wait while it is read - long documents take a moment.
  3. Check the counts and the preview of the recovered text.
  4. Untick the page-break option if you want the text to flow continuously.
  5. Press Download .docx.

Why use this PDF to Word converter

Rebuilds paragraphs and headings from the positions of the text and writes a real .docx, rather than dumping one unbroken block of words. When all you have is a PDF and you need to reuse its words, retyping is slow. Pulling the text into Word gives you something to edit, quote or reformat, without uploading a confidential document to a conversion website.

Why we built it

We built the PDF to Word tool to rebuild paragraphs and headings from the text positions and write a real .docx, not one unbroken block. Extract plain text with PDF to text and handle scanned files with the OCR PDF converter.

Who this tool is for

  • People editing a PDF's text
  • Students reusing a document
  • Office staff updating old files

When to use it

  • Reusing the wording of a document you only have as a PDF.
  • Editing a contract, CV or report that exists only as a PDF.
  • Pulling text out for translation or proofreading.
  • Starting a new document from an old one.

How it works

A PDF does not store paragraphs - it stores words at coordinates. The tool groups words that share a baseline into lines, lines separated by a larger gap into paragraphs, and lines set noticeably larger than the body text into headings.

Those paragraphs are written into a standard .docx, using the same document writer as the Markdown to Word tool, so the file opens cleanly in word processors.

Tables become runs of text, multi-column pages can read across the columns, and images are left out. Treat the result as a text recovery to tidy, not a pixel-perfect copy.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Word?

Choose the PDF, check the preview, and press Download .docx. The tool reads the text, rebuilds paragraphs and headings, and writes a Word document.

Will the layout and images be kept?

No. This recovers the text only. Images, tables as tables and the exact page layout are not carried over.

Why does it say my PDF has no text?

It is probably a scan, which is a picture of each page. Without OCR there is no text to extract.

Is my PDF uploaded to convert it?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and the document never leaves your device.

Can I open the result in Google Docs?

Yes. The .docx opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and most word processors.
