Random Letter Generator
Generate random letters, with a vowels-only or consonants-only option - free, no signup.
Click the star to pin a letter you like. Pinned items stay while you keep generating, are remembered when you come back, and can be copied on their own or with everything else.
What this tool does
Pick Vowels only, Consonants only, or leave it on Any, and generate random letters instantly - useful for word games, classroom activities, or picking a random starting letter. Pin the ones you like and come back to your list later.
Generates random letters of the alphabet, with genuine vowel-only or consonant-only filtering rather than just the full alphabet every time.
Lets you pin letters you like as a shortlist, saved on your device across sessions.
Takes an optional seed so you can reproduce or share the exact same result list.
Builds the 'Any' pool by combining the 5-letter vowel set and the 21-letter consonant set into the full alphabet, rather than treating 'Any' as a separate hard-coded list that could drift out of sync with the two filters.
Keeps 'No repeats' on by default, which naturally caps a Vowels-only batch at 5 distinct results and a Consonants-only batch at 21.
How to use it
- Choose Vowels only, Consonants only, or leave it on Any.
- Pick how many letters you want and press Generate.
- Star any letter you like to pin it, then copy or download your list.
Why use this generator
Games, spelling drills and brainstorming need a random letter, and consonant or vowel restrictions make them more useful.
Why we built it
We built the random letter generator with genuine vowel-only and consonant-only filtering. Solve letter puzzles with the 8-letter word finder and make a puzzle with the word wheel generator.
If your task goes further, try the Random Color Generator, the Random Date Generator and the Random Sentence Generator.

Why the vowel/consonant filter matters
Many actual uses for a random letter specifically need one or the other.
A classroom game that assigns a starting letter for a word, or a word puzzle that needs a consonant to fill a specific slot, doesn't just need 'any random letter' - it needs one from the right category. This tool offers that filter directly, rather than making you re-roll until you happen to land on a vowel or consonant by chance.
What happens if you ask for more unique letters than exist
'No repeats' is a real constraint on a small alphabet, not just a suggestion.
With 'No repeats' on (the default), asking for 10 vowels only actually returns 5 - every vowel exactly once - because there are only 5 distinct vowels to give you. The same applies to a Consonants-only batch capped at 21. This isn't a bug or a silent failure: once every value in the chosen pool has appeared, there's nothing left to add without repeating, so the generator stops there rather than looping forever trying to satisfy an impossible request. Turn off 'No repeats', or switch to Any for the full 26-letter alphabet, if you need a longer batch.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Type | Any, vowels only or consonants only. |
| Count and seed | How many letters and an optional seed. |
| Output | Capital letters, which you can pin. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Letters repeat | Draws are independent. | Generate again. |
| Other alphabets needed | Only A-Z is covered. | Use a tool for that alphabet. |
| Same results appear twice | A seed was entered, which makes results reproducible. | Clear the seed to get a fresh draw each time. |
Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions
How do I generate a random letter online for free?
Choose Vowels only, Consonants only, or Any, pick how many you want, and press Generate.
How many vowels and consonants are there to choose from?
5 vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and 21 consonants, covering the full 26-letter English alphabet.
What is this useful for?
Word games, classroom activities, picking a random starting letter for a name or word, or any activity needing a random letter.
Can I save the letters I like?
Yes - click the star next to a letter to pin it. Pinned letters are saved on your device and stay in your list as you keep generating.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Generation happens entirely in your browser - nothing is sent to a server, and your pinned list is saved only in your own browser's storage.
Why did I get fewer letters than I asked for?
If 'No repeats' is on and you're filtered to Vowels only or Consonants only, the batch is capped at how many distinct letters actually exist in that set - 5 for vowels, 21 for consonants. Switch to Any, or turn off 'No repeats', for a longer batch.
Is 'Any' just a third list of letters, separate from vowels and consonants?
No - 'Any' is built by combining the vowel and consonant sets at generation time, so it's always the full, accurate 26-letter alphabet rather than a separately maintained list that could fall out of sync.
