Rotate PDF

Rotate PDF pages by 90, 180 or 270 degrees - free.

Rotate PDF

Your PDF is rotated inside this page. It is never uploaded.

What this tool does

Choose a PDF, pick a rotation angle, and optionally list specific pages - leave that blank to rotate every page - then download the result.

Rotates all pages, or a specific set of pages you list, by 90, 180 or 270 degrees.

Adds the rotation to whatever orientation each page already has, rather than resetting it to zero first - important for a scanned document whose pages may already be rotated.

Only offers 90, 180 and 270 degree steps, because the rotation value this tool sets is a page-orientation flag, and the PDF format only allows that flag to be a multiple of 90 degrees - arbitrary angles aren't possible this way.

Lets you target a specific page or range, like '1-3, 5', using the same range parser as the split tool, or leave it blank to rotate every page at once.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF.
  2. Pick a rotation angle and, optionally, which pages.
  3. Download the rotated PDF.

Why use this tool

Scanned pages often come out sideways or upside down. Rotating them in the file fixes how every viewer shows them.

Why we built it

We built the rotate PDF tool to add the rotation to each page's existing orientation rather than resetting it, so an already-sideways scan behaves as you expect. Reorder pages with the organize PDF pages tool and trim margins with PDF crop.

For a neighbouring job there is also the Split PDF and the PDF Page Numbers.

Who this tool is for

  • People with sideways scans
  • Office staff fixing documents
  • Students fixing lecture notes

When to use it

  • Fixing a sideways scan.
  • Correcting a few pages only.
  • Preparing a document for printing.
  • Straightening pages after merging.

Why rotation is added, not reset

A scanned document's pages often already have their own rotation.

A PDF page has a stored rotation value, and a scanner or a previous edit can leave it at something other than zero even before you touch it - meaning 'rotate 90 degrees' should mean 'turn it 90 degrees further from wherever it already is', not 'reset it to upright, then apply exactly 90 degrees'. Treating rotation as additive keeps the result correct even for a document that arrives already rotated, which resetting-first approaches get wrong.

Why rotation is a display flag, not a content redraw

Rotating a page sets how it's displayed, not what's actually drawn on it.

Rotating a PDF page here means setting its stored orientation value - a flag every PDF viewer reads and respects when it renders the page. It doesn't touch the underlying content stream at all: the text and image coordinates on the page stay exactly as they were. That's why rotation is instant and lossless regardless of how complex the page's content is, and also why it's strictly a display-orientation change rather than a true 'redraw the page sideways' operation - there's no re-flowing of text or resizing to fit a new orientation.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a PDF for free?

Choose your PDF, pick a rotation angle, and download the result - leave the pages field blank to rotate the whole document.

Can I rotate just some pages, not the whole document?

Yes - list the specific pages or ranges you want rotated, like '1-3, 5', and only those are affected.

Why does rotating twice turn it further instead of resetting?

Rotation is added to each page's existing orientation rather than reset to zero first, so repeated rotations accumulate the way you'd expect turning a physical page to.

Does this work with password-protected PDFs?

No - an encrypted PDF needs to be unlocked first before it can be read and rotated.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. Rotating happens entirely in your browser - your file is never sent to a server.

Why can I only choose 90, 180 or 270 degrees, not a custom angle?

A PDF page's rotation is stored as a display flag in the file itself, and the format only allows that flag to be a multiple of 90 degrees - so those are the only rotations a viewer can render this way.

Does rotating change the actual page content, or just how it displays?

Just how it displays - rotation sets the page's orientation flag, which every PDF viewer respects, without touching or redrawing the underlying text and images.
