Rotate Video

Rotate a sideways or upside-down video, or flip it, and save the corrected version.

Video rotator

Your video is processed inside this page and never uploaded.

This works by playing the video into a recorder, so it takes about as long as the video itself (a 2x speed-up takes half as long). Keep this tab in front while it runs. The result is re-encoded as WebM, or MP4 where your browser can write it.

What this tool does

To rotate a video, choose the file, pick a rotation of 90 degrees clockwise, 180 degrees or 90 degrees anticlockwise, add a flip if needed, and press Start. The corrected video is recorded in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Draws each frame onto a canvas turned by your chosen angle and optionally mirrored, swapping width and height for quarter turns.

Records the result as a new video with the corrected orientation.

How to use it

  1. Choose your video.
  2. Choose a rotation - 90° clockwise is the usual fix for a sideways phone video.
  3. Tick a flip option if you need a mirror image.
  4. Press Start and wait while it is recorded.
  5. Check the result and press Download video.

Why use this video rotator

Rotates by 90, 180 or 270 degrees and flips left-right or upside-down in one pass. Phone and action-camera videos often play sideways or upside down in some apps, because the rotation is stored as a flag the app ignores. Saving the video with the pixels actually turned fixes it everywhere.

Why we built it

We built the rotate video tool to rotate by 90, 180 or 270 degrees and flip in one pass. Crop to a platform shape with crop video and shrink the file with compress video.

Who this tool is for

  • People with sideways phone clips
  • Creators fixing upside-down footage
  • Teachers correcting recordings

When to use it

  • A video plays sideways in an editor or on a website.
  • Footage was shot with the camera upside down.
  • You want a mirrored version of a clip.
  • Making landscape footage portrait, or the reverse.

How it works

Each frame is drawn onto the canvas rotated by the angle you chose, around its centre. For 90 and 270 degrees the output’s width and height are swapped so the picture fits without cropping.

A flip is applied as a mirror either left-to-right or top-to-bottom, before the rotation is shown, so you can combine both.

This tool plays the video into a recorder, so processing takes about as long as the video itself and the tab must stay in front. The result is re-encoded, so it is a new generation of the video rather than a lossless cut.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a video?

Choose the video, pick the rotation, and press Start. The rotated video is recorded and can be downloaded.

Why is my phone video sideways?

Many phones store a rotation flag in the file rather than turning the pixels, and some apps ignore it. Saving a rotated copy bakes the correct orientation in.

Can I flip a video as well?

Yes. Tick Flip left-right for a mirror image or Flip upside-down.

Does it upload my video?

No. It is rotated in your browser and saved to your Downloads folder.

Will it lose quality?

It is re-encoded, so there is a small loss, but the picture size is kept.
