Strikethrough Text Generator
Convert text to strikethrough - free, copy and paste anywhere.

What this tool does
Type or paste your text and it's instantly converted to strikethrough - built from a real Unicode combining mark layered after every character, including spaces, so the line stays unbroken across whole phrases. This works anywhere plain text is accepted, even places that don't support rich-text formatting like bold or italic markup.
Layers a Unicode combining long-stroke-overlay mark after every character in your text, including spaces, so the strikethrough line runs continuously across whole phrases rather than breaking at each word gap.
Works as plain text, so it pastes correctly into bios, comments, and chat apps that don't support rich-text formatting.
Adds exactly one extra Unicode code point (U+0336) per character, which is why struck-through text can count as roughly double the length of the visible text on tools that measure raw code units instead of visible characters.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text.
- Copy the strikethrough result.
- Paste it anywhere - it's plain text with a combining mark, not markup.
Why use this generator
Strikethrough is not available in many bios and chat apps. Combining characters add a line that works in plain text, and make jokes, corrections and edits.
Why we built it
We built the strikethrough text generator to apply the mark to every character including spaces, so the line runs continuously. Pair it with the underline text generator and the fancy text generator.
Who this tool is for
- Social media users and bloggers
- Planners marking finished tasks
- Anyone adding a joke or correction effect
When to use it
- Showing a joke correction or an edit.
- Marking items as done in plain text.
- Styling a bio or caption.
- Showing old and new prices in a plain-text field.
Why the line doesn't break at spaces
The combining mark is applied to every character, spaces included.
A combining mark attaches to the character immediately before it, so a strikethrough generator that only marks letters and skips spaces produces a line with a visible gap at every word boundary. This tool applies the combining mark to every character in the input, spaces included, so a multi-word phrase reads as one continuous struck-through line rather than several separately struck words.
What character is actually being added
The line is a single, named Unicode character - not a font effect or an image.
The strikethrough effect comes from U+0336 COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY, a real character in the Unicode Combining Diacritical Marks block, inserted immediately after every character in your text. That means each visible character actually becomes two Unicode code points - the letter and its combining mark. A grapheme-aware character counter (like the one built into this tool) still counts each letter-plus-mark pair as a single character, but any tool that counts raw code units instead of visible characters will report roughly double the length you'd expect just from reading the text, which matters if you're pasting strikethrough text somewhere with a strict character limit.
What you give it, and what you get back
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Input | Any text. |
| Output | Text with a line through each character, spaces included. |
| Notes | Copy it into any app. |
Issues you may run into
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The line is missing | An app or font strips combining marks. | Try another app or font. |
| Characters look split | Fonts draw the marks differently. | Try a different font. |
| Screen readers announce marks | Combining characters are read out. | Avoid for important text. |
Assumptions and limitations
- A handful of older apps and some fonts strip or fail to render combining marks; when that happens the line disappears but the underlying letters still read correctly.
- Screen readers may announce the combining marks separately from the letters, making strikethrough text harder to follow with assistive technology.
- This isn't real formatting - a system that specifically searches for the word won't match text with combining marks layered through it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make strikethrough text online for free?
Type or paste your text and the strikethrough version appears instantly - copy it and paste it anywhere.
Why doesn't the line break at spaces like other generators?
The combining mark is layered after every character including spaces, so the line stays continuous across a whole phrase instead of breaking at each word gap.
Will this work in apps that don't support text formatting?
Yes - this is plain text with a Unicode combining mark, not markup, so it works anywhere plain text is accepted, including places with no bold/italic support at all.
Why doesn't it show a line on my device?
A small number of older apps and fonts don't render combining marks. The letters themselves are unaffected and still read correctly, just without the visible line.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser - nothing is sent to a server.
What Unicode character actually makes the line?
U+0336 COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY, a standard Unicode combining mark added immediately after every character including spaces - not an image or a special font.
Does strikethrough text count differently toward a character limit?
It can. Each character becomes two Unicode code points (the letter plus its combining mark), so a counter that measures raw code units rather than visible characters will report roughly double the length of the text you can actually read.
